Small Body, Big Engine: How Steve Ekpenisi Welds Nigeria’s Cultural Soul into Global Metal Art Masterpieces
Discover the remarkable world of Nigerian metal sculptor Steve Ekpenisi, exhibiting at Artmiabo International Art Festival 2025 in Lagos. His figurative and abstract metal art celebrates African heritage with stunning craftsmanship and contemporary relevance. About Steve Ekpenisi – Nigerian Sculptor Extraordinaire Born on August 13, 1978, in Abavo, Delta State, Steve Ekpenisi has transformed his lifelong passion into one of Nigeria’s most compelling sculptural voices.
A proud graduate of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, where he clinched the Overall Best Student Prize with distinction in Sculpture (2008), Steve's mastery lies in figurative, imaginative, and semi-abstract metal sculptures that push creative boundaries.
From an early age, his artistic curiosity was evident—often to his parents’ dismay—as he disassembled household gadgets to explore form and structure. Today, that raw passion fuels his signature works crafted from mild steel, stainless steel, brass, scrap metal, and rods, celebrating African identity, tradition, and socio-economic narratives.
With a stature that contrasts sharply with the monumental energy of his work, Steve is affectionately known as “Small Body, Big Engine.” His studio process is a performance of sparks and sound, where metal surrenders to his vision and storytelling.
What Makes His Art Unique?
Sculptural Storytelling: Rooted in African art heritage, Steve’s work fuses contemporary Nigerian sculpture with global design relevance. Mastery in Metal: He transforms industrial materials into poetic, expressive forms that exude power, elegance, and cultural symbolism. Unrivaled Detail & Craftsmanship: His intricate compositions reflect a near-obsessive attention to detail, making every piece museum-worthy.
