Discover the transformative art of Dr. Lydia Okon, a Nigerian medical doctor and multidisciplinary creative whose intricate quilling and digital storytelling explore themes of resilience, serenity, and healing through art.

It all began at the Novus Art Exhibition, where I was first introduced to Lydia. From the moment we started talking, I could sense an energy about her, a quiet yet powerful mix of passion and purpose.

She eagerly pulled out her phone, scrolling through photos of her artwork, each piece more striking than the last. Her excitement was contagious; her eyes lit up with every image she shared, as though each creation carried a part of her soul.

At that moment, Lydia felt every inch the visual creative confident, expressive, and deeply connected to her art. So, it came as a surprise when she gently revealed that she is, in fact, also a practicing medical doctor.

She explained, with refreshing sincerity, how she refuses to choose between medicine and art. Instead, she is weaving both worlds together, channeling her skills to build something even more meaningful.

Her vision is clear: to use her dual passions as a force for change, blending medicine and art into therapy, storytelling, and healing.

Listening to her, I realized that Lydia is more than an artist or a doctor; she is a bridge between two disciplines, determined to make an impact where it matters most.

Her quilling pieces, such as “The Awakening” and “Serenity”, exemplify her signature style: bold, intricate, and deeply expressive. Each strand of paper, carefully shaped and layered, becomes a metaphor for resilience, beauty, and serenity.

These works are not only visually captivating but also deeply symbolic, reflecting the delicate balance between life’s fragility and strength.

With a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Ibadan (2024), she has built a foundation in patient care while simultaneously nurturing her love for storytelling and creative expression.

She has also showcased her work in exhibitions like Becoming at Terra Kulture (2021). But Lydia’s work extends beyond exhibitions and accolades. At its core, her practice is about merging art and medicine to inspire change.

By weaving together paper craft, digital media, and animation, she sparks conversations around healing, gender equity, and human resilience.

Her art reminds us that storytelling, whether through words, images, or motion has the power to transform perspectives and foster empathy.

When Lydia is not creating or caring for patients, she enjoys dancing and watching films, grounding herself in the joys of everyday life. Yet, in every sphere, her message remains the same: creativity heals, and storytelling connects us all.
