The Nigerian Recycling Artist Redefining Sustainability Through Creativity

April 29 – May 1, 2025, Lagos, Nigeria – The Artmiabo International Art Festival (AMIAF) returns with the groundbreaking theme, ‘The Artconomy,’ celebrating the fusion of art and commerce. Among the distinguished artists showcasing at this year’s festival is Nigerian recycling artist Samson Akinnire, whose innovative installations are reshaping contemporary art and sustainability.

Who is Samson Akinnire?

Born on June 1, 1986, and based in Lagos, Nigeria, Samson Akinnire has earned international recognition for his ability to transform discarded materials into striking works of art.

By harvesting waste such as aluminum, stainless cans, automobile parts, electrical gadgets, and kitchenware, he reimagines trash into intricate sculptures and installations.

His creative process involves nailing, gluing, welding, burning, punching, and sewing these discarded elements together with copper wire onto engraved wood, producing bold and thought-provoking compositions.

Art as a Way of Life

For Akinnire, art is more than just expression—it is a way of life. His works serve as inclusive narratives that reflect nostalgic occurrences, personal experiences, and environmental consciousness.

Each piece invites humanizing engagement, encouraging viewers to rethink their relationship with waste and sustainability. His ability to merge complex materials into seamless artistic expressions highlights the beauty of transformation and the power of artistic vision.
