For Nigerian artist Itunu Adegboyega, a party is not merely a gathering. It is a living archive where identity is performed, relationships are strengthened, traditions are passed down, and communities remember who they are.
Through expressive figurative and portrait-based paintings, Itunu documents the people, objects, gestures, and emotions that define contemporary West African communal life. His work is rooted in Expressionism, using visible brushstrokes, loose forms, and changing colour palettes to communicate mood and energy.

The work also acknowledges a matriarchal form of cultural apprenticeship. Techniques, aesthetics, and social knowledge are often passed from mothers to daughters, allowing traditions to remain distinctive across generations.
His work also reflects contemporary Owambe culture, particularly the high-energy celebrations associated with cities such as Lagos and Accra. Traditional textiles and headgear appear beside modern accessories, fashion, and social behaviour.
This combination is critical to the meaning of the artworks Itunu will be exhibiting. It shows that heritage is not fixed. Every generation inherits traditions, modifies them, and makes them relevant to its own time.
The result is not necessarily cultural loss. It can also represent cultural resilience.
