This is common place in African societies where grandmothers, play very major roles in upbringing of children, from a child's birth the grandmother automatically moves into the home, to help the new mother with the care taking of the child.
This is so that, there is breathing room for a mother to take care of herself, her other children, her husband and focus on what ever else she does, either her profession or wifely duties.
