Over 20 years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Richard Dickson in my hometown of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It was an ordinary afternoon in my art gallery when he walked in, turning it into a moment I'll never forget.

My staff had informed me the day before that Richard had traveled all the way from Ibadan a really far state in western Nigeria to my state in Southern Nigeria, to meet me after someone recommended my gallery.

Although asked to leave his works behind to avoid carrying them around, Richard made a lasting impression even before we met. My team knew me well enough to predict that I would appreciate his artistry.

When Richard finally walked into my gallery, it felt like reconnecting with an old friend. Fast forward to 2007, I was honored to recommend him to Terra Kulture, Nigeria's renowned art institute, for a Ford Foundation award and grant—an opportunity he fully deserved.

Richard's artistry has remained true to his roots, capturing the essence of everyday life in his environment. 


His unique interpretation of the world around him resonates deeply with his audience. 


His "Funny Couples" figures, which humorously depict relationships, were some of my gallery’s best sellers—and I hear they still are.

Through his pottery, Richard narrates the struggles of the common man, evoking empathy and reflection on the daily challenges people face just to make a living. 


He truly embodies the spirit of the "Potter’s Hands," showcasing an undiluted, pure creativity that is rare among artists.
