Master Sculptor and Art Educationist, Adeola Balogun Celebrated at this Years Amiaf Artfestival.

Dr. Adeola Balogun combines a fully engaged studio practice with a teaching career at Nigeria's premier tertiary institution, The Yaba College of Technology. He graduated from Yaba College of Technology, with a specialization in sculpture (1993/94) and Masters in Fine Art (MFA, Sculpture) at the University of Benin (2001/4), Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He had his Ph.D. in Sculpture (Studio) at Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State.

Balogun’s brilliance as an artist transcends the core medium of sculpture on which he has built a reputation but also traverses other regions of the visual arts. This he realizes through uncanny capacity in transforming mundane materials that have seemingly lost their primary purpose into objects of remarkable aesthetic contemplation imbued with multilayered meanings.

Adeola has staged over a dozen solo exhibitions and won several awards. He has staged solo exhibitions and participated in several art residencies in the Netherlands, U.S.A., UK and U.A.E.

Adeola Balogun, Grandma: Connecting with Modernity, mixed media, 65cm x 55cm x 44cm, 2023,

Dr Adeola Balogun is an artist whose career as a sculptor belongs in the generation that has uplifted metal sculpture in Nigeria. From public to private commissioned works, Balogun’s touch on the sculpture landscape include private collections and public space art. Balogun’s pedigree as a sculptor has given him a space as both exhibiting artist and awardee at the 2024 edition of Artmiabo International Art Festival (AMIAF), themed Sculptor’s Odyssey.

Organised by Miabo Enyadike-led ArtMiabo, the 2024 edition, which holds from April 29-May 1, 2024, at EbonyLife, Victoria Island Lagos.
In a chat ahead of the event, Balogun spoke on quite a number of factors on the peculiar nature of sculpture as well as the importance of Sculptor’s Odyssey as a necessary gathering of artists that specifies genre.

“I found the ArtMiabo Award initiative very apt and timely. In other genres of arts, such as music, theatre, etc, there are myriads of awards being organized annually for the promotion of such arts; visual art should not be an exception.

Since we have different genres of visual arts, I encourage other art organizations, art aficionados, individuals, and corporate establishments, to roe similar line. Without mincing words, such efforts will inspire artists to exert more effort in their practice as the recognition and reward are bound to follow.”
